We Lost the Climax: Suzhal Directors Pushkar-Gayatri Shelved Demonetisation-Based Film After Reality Struck

Pushkar and Gayatri have earned the reputation of being smart filmmakers. Their films and shows - be it Vikram Vedha or Suzhal: The Vortex - have always ignited chatter. As Suzhal returns for a second season on Prime Video, the filmmakers chat with HT about the show and how their research can lead them to unusual rabbit holes.

About Suzhal Season 2

The inaugural season of Suzhal presented a self-contained narrative; however, the creators have returned with a second season. Pushkar elaborates, "This was always part of our vision. We aimed to extend the journeys of Sakkarai and Nandini, portrayed by Kathir and Aishwarya Rajesh, respectively, beyond a single season. We intended to introduce a fresh mystery and a new case while maintaining these two characters as the central figures."

Nikhil Madhok, Head of Original Content India at Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios, shares with HT that productions like Suzhal have redefined the concept of a tentpole title within the Indian OTT landscape. "Reflecting on season 1, we recognized it as a global tentpole. Regardless of the story's origin, as long as it possesses strength and can be made accessible in various languages to audiences worldwide, it qualifies as a tentpole," he states.

In the first season, the filmmakers employed the small-town murder narrative, akin to series such as Twin Peaks and Broadchurch. In the second season, they introduce the locked room mystery element. Discussing their approach to these narrative structures, Gayatri remarks, "We are avid consumers of content. We engage with a wide array of films, television, and OTT offerings. When we encounter a concept we appreciate, we explore how we can reinterpret it in our unique style."

However, this intense engagement with content often necessitates the abandonment of certain writing projects upon discovering similar themes in other shows or films. "There were scripts we had to discard for clear reasons," Gayatri notes.

When demonetisation derailed their film

The most amusing incident, according to Pushkar, was rooted in real life. "We were developing a feature script that culminated in a climax centred around demonetisation. Six months later, it occurred in reality. We lost the film's climax!" Gayatri concurs, stating, "This isn't even drawn from another film or series; it's unfolding in real-time. This is far more astonishing."

Pushkar elaborates that their script's concept was inspired by a historical instance of demonetisation from decades past, which they believed was obscure enough to serve as an intriguing plot twist. "There was a previous occasion when Rajaji (C Rajagopalachari) demonetised the ₹1000 note at one time. That event has faded into history. We based our idea on that, consulted with an uncle who was an IAS officer and kept everything confidential. We refrained from discussing the concept with anyone to maintain the element of surprise. And just like that, we lost the climax," he explains.

The second season of Suzhal: The Vortex reintroduces Kathir and Aishwarya Rajesh, alongside Lal, Saravanan, Manjima Mohan, and Monisha Blessy. This eight-episode season is set to premiere on February 28 on Prime Video.
