Vivek Oberoi made a name for himself in Bollywood with films such as "Saathiya" and "Company." However, his career faced a downturn when he found himself without work for months, even though his films were successful at the box office. As a result, Vivek decided to pursue his backup plan of becoming a businessman.
In a conversation with SCREEN, Vivek Oberoi explained that he turned to business to counter the influence of certain factions within the industry. He revealed that after the success of "Shootout at Lokhandwala," he faced a 14 to 15-month dry spell without any work, which prompted his decision to enter the business world.
Vivek Oberoi reflects on being out of work for 14 to 15 months.
He said, "I have completed about 67 projects over the past 22 years, but the industry is very insecure. You can perform well, win awards, and do your job as an actor, yet still find yourself without work for various reasons. After 2007, when I acted in 'Shootout at Lokhandwala' and the 'Ganpat' song went viral, I won awards and expected numerous offers to come my way. However, I didn’t receive any. I found myself sitting at home for 14 to 15 months after the film’s success. It was only around 2009 that I decided I didn’t want to rely entirely on this industry; I wanted to build my economic independence. I didn’t want to be in a position where a lobby could dictate my future or where someone could bully me into doing something because they held power."
Vivek Oberoi discusses his decision to pursue a career as a businessman.
Vivek Oberoi shared that he has always viewed business as his Plan B, which has provided him with financial independence. He stated, "Business was always a Plan B for me, and I chose cinema as my passion. I believe my livelihood should come from my business, which allowed me to earn my independence and escape the pressures of lobbies or the need to compromise my values. Some people thrive in that environment, but that hasn’t been the case for me.”
Vivek Oberoi was last seen in Rohit Shetty's debut web series, "Indian Police Force," which also featured Shilpa Shetty, Sidharth Malhotra, Sharad Kelkar, and Shweta Tiwari. He will next appear in the film "Masti 4" alongside Riteish Deshmukh and Aftab Shivdasani.
