Jasleen Royal recently had the opportunity to open for the UK band Coldplay at their concert in Mumbai. However, her performance elicited a variety of responses on social media. In light of this, filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri has expressed his critical views regarding Jasleen Royal's performance during the event.
Vivek criticises Jasleen Royal's performance at Coldplay
Agnihotri shared a video showcasing Jasleen's performance on X (formerly Twitter) and voiced his dissatisfaction with the prevailing trend of valuing social media fame over genuine talent, while also directing criticism towards the singer. He remarked, “The audience possesses more musicality than these auto-tuned, Instagram-created artists. Consider if she lacked followers on Instagram; would she have even been permitted to audition for a local singing competition?” He further stated in his tweet, “The emphasis on follower count rather than talent has become the new standard.”
Some users on Twitter expressed their support for the filmmaker, while others came to the defence of the singer. One comment noted, "She received an opportunity due to her prominence; others are still awaiting theirs." Another user remarked, “I have frequently encountered individuals on X Spaces who sing better.”
In support of Jasleen Royal, a fan commented, "I recognize that there are numerous talented artists in India who could have opened the concert, but she has been under considerable scrutiny recently. She was likely feeling anxious at that moment. It is time to move forward; she has endured enough negativity." Another user simply remarked, "Just let her be."
Coldplay held three concerts in Mumbai as part of their Music of the Spheres World Tour. Jasleen Royal celebrated for her popular songs such as Ranjha and Din Shagna Da, served as the opening act for all three evenings.
