Vir Das Takes Aim at Indian Award Shows: The Challenges of Edgy Humor
1 month ago | 5 Views
Actor-comedian Vir Das made a playful jab at India's award shows, questioning why comedians aren't asked to host them. He also poked fun at the buzz around India's Got Latent. It looked like he was hinting at the Oscars, which Conan O'Brien hosted, in his comments.
Vir's Instagram update
The actor-comedian hopped on Instagram to share his thoughts about award shows, seemingly throwing shade at the India’s Got Latent controversy that popped up after Ranveer Allahbadia made a controversial joke on Samay Raina's show.
“While tuning into a big entertainment awards show, I can't help but think that some of my fellow Indian comedians are playing a little game in our heads. We often wonder why Indian awards shows don’t feature modern stand-up comedians at the big events,” Vir mentioned.
He continued, “Then... we start imagining some of the jokes we’d make, the total chaos that would ensue, and ultimately decide it’s probably for the best.”
He took another jab at the award shows in India, poking fun at the endless list of sponsors that hosts have to read out at the start of each event. Vir mentioned, “And let’s not forget that the opening monologue happens right at the beginning, which means you really should show up on time and stick around for the whole thing. It just makes sense... plus, it’s tough to pull off a sharp joke after listing off 'Manikchand pan pasand fun flips Zorro plus zandu bandu MDH MCD motorola parivar...'.”
Vir on the India’s Got Talent drama
Last month, Vir jumped on Instagram to share his thoughts about the ongoing drama with Ranveer.
In his Instagram Stories, he criticized the media's tactics, describing them as "a bunch of irrelevant mainstream media anchors on the verge of extinction trying to take down new media that gets millions more views." He pointed out that the backlash against new media, especially YouTube influencers, was more about safeguarding traditional media interests rather than focusing on the actual content or issues.
He mentioned, “Whether you’re a fan of new media or not doesn’t really matter. That’s part of the issue here. While we’re busy discussing what makes good comedy, let’s also talk about what constitutes good journalism, the news they should be covering, the questions they ought to be asking, and who they should be directing those questions to. A true artist will take feedback quietly and maybe grow from it. Regardless, the impact of your comedy on your career and audience is pretty immediate. That’s just how it goes.”
About the stir
Ranveer made quite a splash during his time on Samay Raina's India's Got Latent when he posed a pretty shocking question to a contestant: "Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once to make it stop forever?" While the audience laughed it off, the comment didn't sit well with some politicians and social media users, leading to a wave of backlash and multiple FIRs against Ranveer, Samay, Ashish Chanchlani, and Apoorva Mukhija.
In the wake of the uproar, Ranveer issued an apology, and Samay took down all episodes of India's Got Latent from YouTube. Initially, the Supreme Court had put a stop to airing new episodes, but on Monday, they gave Ranveer the green light to continue his podcast, The Ranveer Show, with some conditions attached.
