Filmmaker Vikram Bhatt has revealed that during the 2000s, as his films started to underperform at the box office, even his crew began to question his capability to produce quality films. In a recent interview, the director reflected on the period when he created the horror film 1920 and discussed how he remained steadfast in his convictions despite the scepticism surrounding him.

Vikram Bhatt on his series of flops

Following the success of the blockbuster Raaz in 2002, Vikram Bhatt faced a string of box office failures, with his subsequent 13 films not performing well commercially. He recounted, “After achieving a few hits, I encountered a series of flops, and in this industry, there is a saying: ‘if you experience a couple of bad Fridays, people will stop answering your calls.’ I felt powerless. During that period, I had a concept for a film titled 1920, and I made the decision to direct it,” he shared with Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiya on their YouTube channel.

Nevertheless, his challenges continued with the production of 1920, which proved to be quite arduous. He remarked, “I faced significant difficulties in making that film. There was no one willing to purchase it from me, and no one had faith in my vision. The situation was so dire that even my lighting technician questioned, ‘Sir, what kind of film is this?’ I responded, ‘This is the film that will succeed.’ After finishing production, I conducted approximately 35 screenings of the film, yet no one was interested in acquiring it. I approached every studio and producer, but none expressed any willingness. Everyone had their own perspectives and justifications. Ultimately, I was the one who released the film. The day of the release was filled with anxiety, and the atmosphere was tense.”

About 1920 and Vikram Bhatt's other hits

The film in 1920 featured Adah Sharma and Rajneesh Duggal in the principal roles. Despite its modest budget, the horror movie achieved a box office gross of ₹14 crore, proving successful enough to generate a franchise. Vikram Bhatt continued to find success with subsequent films such as Haunted 3D and Raaz 3. However, his recent projects have not performed well at the box office.
