Vidyapati Twist: Dhananjaya’s Cameo Wasn’t Supposed to Be in the Trailer

The release of the trailer for the upcoming Kannada comedy Vidyapati not only provided a glimpse into the storyline but also surprised viewers with a cameo appearance by actor-producer Daali Dhananjaya. He will portray an eccentric character named Anaconda, who appears to deliver a formidable punch, as suggested by the trailer visuals. Initially, the plan was to keep his involvement in the film a secret, according to lead actor Nagabhushana.

Making Dhananjaya the big draw of Vidyapati

Highlighting Dhananjaya's role in Vidyapati, Nagabhushana stated, “During the editing of the trailer, directors Eshaam and Haseen intended to include a scene where Dhananjaya spins someone around before slamming them to the ground, but the distribution team preferred to keep this as a surprise for the audience. However, considering the current trend of Kannada audiences not frequenting theaters, the filmmakers decided it would be beneficial to offer something enticing in the trailer to encourage viewers to visit cinemas on April 10.”

Nagabhushana further remarked that Dhananjaya's inclusion was a strategic decision by the directors. During the story presentation, they shared details about the character that piqued his interest. When Dhananjaya sought more information about the role and the filmmakers' vision, they presented an AI-generated image of the character. Upon seeing it, Dhananjaya contemplated whether he would be suitable for the part. “Interestingly, Eshaam and Haseen had used a reference image of Dhananjaya to create the AI version of the character, which ultimately persuaded him to accept the role,” Nagabhushana elaborated.

Having his close friend and producer involved in the film alleviates some of the pressure on Nagabhushana. Unlike the release of Tagarupalya, where the responsibility of attracting audiences fell entirely on him, he now anticipates a more balanced distribution of interest. He believes that viewers will be drawn to the film for Dhananjaya, the leading actress Malaika Vasupal (known for her role in Upadhyaksha), or for himself. This shift is a significant relief for Nagabhushana, especially considering Dhananjaya's considerable financial investment in the project.

Vidyapati marks Dhananjaya's fourth production, following Badava Rascal, Head Bush, and Tagaru Palya. While the first two films featured Dhananjaya in the lead role, Tagaru Palya was centered around Nagabhushana.
