Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra recently shared a tough moment from the 1980s, right after his first feature film, Sazaye Maut, came out. He revealed that he was really let down by how the film was received and even contemplated ending his life on the Lonavala highway. Thankfully, he reconsidered when he thought about his family.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra talks about his decision to end his life.
Chopra is out there promoting his latest film, Zero Se Restart, which dives into the journey behind his 2023 success, 12th Fail. In a chat with NDTV during the promo tour, he opened up about how he had to hit the reset button on his life back in the '80s. “Most people wouldn’t believe it, but years ago, I was on the brink of taking my own life. I felt so lost. I was standing on the Lonavala highway, watching trucks go by, just a step away from ending it all. But my family's love pulled me back,” he shared.
He went on to explain that this tough moment came after his film Sazaye Maut was released and while he was working on his next project, Khamosh. Sazaye Maut, which came out in 1981, marked his first major Hindi film and was based on his FTII diploma project, Murder at Monkey Hill, featuring Naseeruddin Shah. Unfortunately, it didn’t perform well at the box office.
“People who know me today might be shocked to hear I went through such a dark time. But it’s crucial to voice that it’s okay to struggle. You’re not just born strong; you have to fight your own battles. Some you win, some you lose. The real joy lies not in the outcome but in the fight itself,” he said.
