Vedhika has just wound up a hectic promotional campaign for her film Petta Rap, in which she is paired with actor-choreographer-filmmaker Prabhu Deva. The film, directed by SJ Sinu, will be in theatres on September 27 and has Vedhika as an aspiring rockstar, while Prabhu Deva is a struggling actor, trying to become an action hero.

Vedhika shaking a leg with Prabhu Deva and matching him step-for-step, has, of course, become a major talking point for netizens and the actress is glad that the song, Petta Rap, has got that kind of reaction. “I have always been known as a good dancer, especially in Tamil cinema, but Petta Rap is the toughest song I have done to date. Dancing with Prabhu Deva and holding my own is no easy feat, so I had to give it my absolute best,” says the actress, adding that one of the reasons she was cast in the role is that the makers needed someone who could dance.

While Vedhika had met Prabhu Deva earlier, this was the first time that she was getting to work with him. “I rehearsed a lot before going on set and even persevered through an injury, which gave me one of the most thrilling experiences of my career – to be able to dance with Prabhu Deva, a legend. This is the stuff of dreams. When I was shooting for the song with him, I tried my best not to let the fact that I was working with him affect me. I just focused on what I needed to do. That’s the best you can do when working with someone like him – you come prepared so that he doesn’t have to do many takes because of, say, me,” she says.

What Vedhika loved about Petta Rap

Apart from the fact that she’s paired with Prabhu Deva, what was the clincher for her? “Prabhu Deva was, undoubtedly, what sealed the deal. Besides that, I am very clear that I don’t have to be headlining every project I do. Petta Rap is a commercial film and I am the only heroine, so I have enough to do in the film. I looked at it as welcome break from the serious role that I had been doing. For me, it was a big relief. I may not have the scope for performance like, say, in Yakshini or Fear, but it’s still good enough – in the commercial space, I am getting to look different than my other characters. It’s very colorful, fresh, and youthful,” says Vedhika.

The actress has 4 songs in the film, each better than the other. “I have no complaints and wanted to be a part of the film. Yes, the story revolves around Prabhu Deva, but I loved what I got to do. It’s a fun film that I was looking forward to,” she says.
