Comedian and writer Varun Grover recently criticized the Mumbai Police for summoning audience members who attended Kunal Kamra's show, following backlash over Kamra's jokes about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Varun took to social media to offer some light-hearted advice, which resonated with his followers.
Varun Grover's dig at Mumbai Police
On Tuesday, Varun shared a video message on his Instagram account addressing the ongoing situation related to Kunal Kamra’s performance.
He stated, “I just learned that the police are calling the audience of Kunal Kamra to inquire about what he said during his show. I believe there is no greater insult to a comedian than having someone else recount their jokes. They lose their charm and won’t be amusing. If you genuinely want to hear them, attend Kunal Kamra’s show and listen to him directly. However, for that to happen, you need to permit the show to take place.”
He concluded, “I think that would be the best approach. You’ll grasp what he is saying, and it will be entertaining. So, I suggest not summoning the audience; they will spoil the jokes.” Accompanying the video, the writer and stand-up comedian captioned his post: "Let jokes live."
Fans were in stitches over Varun's commentary on the current controversy. One user remarked, "These individuals don’t even understand how to be offended properly." Another added, "Well said, only Kamra can execute his work flawlessly." A further comment stated, "What a legend! (laughing emojis) However, the Indian police force's display was quite embarrassing." Another individual quipped, "Let’s also call the YouTube viewers."
Why Kunal Kamra is facing backlash
In his latest comedic video, Naya Bharat, Kunal parodied a song from the 1997 film Dil To Pagal Hai to poke fun at Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. This led to a backlash, with Shiv Sena supporters vandalizing the Habitat Studio, the location where the video was filmed.
The comedian faces charges under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023: Section 353(1)(b) for ‘publishing or circulating false statements or rumors,’ Section 352 for ‘provoking a breach of peace,’ and Section 356(2) for ‘defamation,’ which specifically addresses anyone who, through words or other means, makes or publishes an imputation with the intent to cause harm.
