Lyricist, filmmaker, and comedian Varun Grover's recent stand-up comedy performance, part of his tour titled ‘Nothing Makes Sense,’ addressed a variety of subjects, including the troubling situation of comedians facing arrest for their jokes and the dismal state of governance. At the outset, he included a disclaimer that subtly referenced the recent controversy involving Kunal Kamra.

What Varun added in the disclaimer 

Varun included in his disclaimer, “These are jokes. The venue is not at fault here, nor am I. This is a reflection of our times. If you are offended, break a clock.”

This remark was a subtle reference to the recent uproar that occurred last month when comedian Kunal Kamra made remarks about Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a stand-up performance in Mumbai.

Members of the Shiv Sena vandalized the Habitat Comedy Club in Khar, the location of Kamra's show. Kamra described the destruction of the venue as “senseless,” likening it to someone tipping over a truck full of tomatoes simply because they were dissatisfied with the butter chicken they received. In response to the controversy, he stated, “I will not apologize... I do not fear this mob, and I will not hide under my bed waiting for this to pass.”

What Varun said about comedians 

During his performance, Varun remarked, “Comedians do not lead particularly secure lives. At any moment, someone can take you away… For instance, Munawar Faruqui was imprisoned simply for telling a joke; he spent three months in jail. After his release, he appeared on Kangana Ranaut's show for 100 days. The situation is quite dire. Being a comedian in today's world is extremely challenging.”
