Actor Val Kilmer, famous for his roles in iconic films such as Top Gun and The Doors, passed away on April 1 at the age of 65. He was especially recognized for his use of method acting, a technique that involved deeply immersing himself in the mindset of the characters he portrayed.

Kilmer's approach to method acting

The actor took on the role of the heavy-drinking Doc Holliday in the 1993 American Western film Tombstone. According to Bloomberg, he went to great lengths to prepare for the part, even filling his bed with ice for the final scene to replicate the sensation of dying from tuberculosis.

Tombstone featured a talented cast, including Kurt Russell, Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe, Michael Biehn, and Dana Delany. The film has earned a reputation as a cult classic and remains one of the standout films in Kilmer's career.

What the actor mentioned

Over the years, he's been described as a challenging presence on set for his fellow crew members. In his memoir, I’m Your Huckleberry (a nod to a line from Tombstone), the actor reflected on his reputation and his choice to embrace method acting for his roles. He mentioned, “In a bold effort to encourage directors, actors, and other collaborators to stay true to the essence of each project, and to infuse a bit of Suzukian spirit into various Hollywood moments, I was labeled as difficult and ended up alienating the heads of major studios.”

In 2014, the actor was diagnosed with throat cancer. A documentary about his life, titled Val, premiered at Cannes in July 2021 and revealed that he required a breathing tube. Despite his health challenges, he returned to his iconic role in 2021’s Top Gun: Maverick, even though he had lost his ability to speak due to the cancer.
