Unni Mukundan’s Game Plan: What He Wants Before 40

Currently, Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan is gaining significant attention from audiences nationwide due to his recent film, Marco, which is being described as the most violent film in Indian cinema history. The movie performed well in its original Malayalam version and received acclaim in its Hindi-dubbed release, successfully entering the Rs 100 crore club, despite its A-rating for graphic violence. Following the conclusion of its theatrical run, Marco is set to premiere on OTT platforms on February 14, prompting Unni to engage in a new series of promotional interviews.

Unni Mukundan: I want to do a romantic drama, like, say, Nivin Pauly's Premam

In a conversation with Galatta Plus, Unni expressed his desire to undertake a romantic drama before reaching the age of 40. He noted that while Marco targeted a younger audience and Malikappuram appealed to viewers over 50, he aspires to create a film that resonates with those in between, particularly couples. He stated, “I have yet to participate in a romantic film, akin to Nivin Pauly’s Premam. This is a genre I wish to explore before I turn 40.” Unni emphasized that he is not interested in portraying a 25-year-old character as he approaches his 40s.

He further mentioned that if this ambition does not come to fruition soon, he may leave it unfulfilled. “In the next 3-4 years, I hope to see this project materialize. However, if it does not happen due to other commitments that require my attention, I will consider exploring romance after I turn 40. If I can maintain my appearance and convincingly portray a 25-year-old, I might attempt it, but the likelihood is low,” he remarked. Unni also pointed out that, unlike many of his contemporaries, his filmography lacks a diverse range of genres, including family dramas, romantic comedies, and action films.

The actor experienced a prolonged period of stagnation lasting approximately six to seven years, during which he participated in films he considered to be of high quality, yet they failed to achieve commercial success. He remarked, "I exerted considerable effort, but it did not yield any benefits; I was not part of the conversation, nor did these projects perform well at the box office. I found myself in a state of limbo. The most prudent decision I made was to avoid leading roles in lower-tier films, opting instead to take on supporting roles or significant parts in major commercial productions." He further noted that much of his work from 2014 to 2019 involved playing secondary roles alongside actors striving for excellence. His strategy was to maintain his presence in the industry and await his opportunity to shine.
