16 days ago | 5 Views
Veteran and celebrated music composer Ilaiyaraaja, who stands the test of time, had recently sued the makers of Good Bad Ugly for the unauthorised usage of his yesteryear songs in the film. For the unversed, Ilaiyaraaja is strictly against the use of his songs in other films without his prior permission, and holds no bar when it comes to moving legally when other films make use of his songs.
Good Bad Ugly is the latest example, with the Ajith Kumar-starrer using Ilaiyaraaja’s song Ilamai Idho Idho in one of its fight sequences. Subsequently, Ilaiyaraaja filed a case. In the latest, Ilaiyaraaja’s brother and composer Gangai Amaran came in support of the former and expressed how it is still the old songs that are saving new films.
Gangai Amaran on brother Ilaiyaraaja suing makers for unauthorised use of music

Gangai Amaran recently addressed an event where he expressed his support for his brother Ilaiyaraaja's decision to seek copyright for his music. He emphasized that it is appropriate to request permission for the use of their songs. "There have been instances when our records sold exceptionally well, yet we received no financial compensation. Eventually, my brother (Ilaiyaraaja) secured a music contract that granted him the rights. In fact, it was after I suggested it that he permitted stage singers to perform without requiring royalties."
Regarding the use of Ilaiyaraaja's songs in films, Gangai Amaran remarked, "Music directors are paid in crores, yet their songs often fail to resonate. When our songs are played, they receive applause. It seems that when you cannot achieve success with your own composer, you resort to using our songs, correct? Shouldn't we then receive our fair share for that? If permission is sought, he is willing to grant it at no cost. However, how many actually ask for it, which is his concern."

Ilaiyaraaja's latest musical composition is for Viduthalai: Part 2, which can be streamed on ZEE5. Directed by Vetrimaaran, this period action film features performances by Soori, Vijay Sethupathi, and others.
