Fans of Hannah Waddingham, known for her role in Ted Lasso, were surprised this week when she made a brief appearance in the newly released trailer for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. This trailer offers a glimpse into the concluding installment of the popular action series, which is scheduled to premiere in May 2025. Waddingham's fleeting moment in the trailer generated considerable excitement among viewers.
While many were unaware of her involvement in the film, Waddingham had alluded to this collaboration during a Christmas Day segment on James Martin’s Saturday Morning in December 2023.
After spending "five intense days" with Tom Cruise aboard the USS George HW Bush, Waddingham expressed to Martin, “I must admit, I have a real issue with anyone who criticizes him now.”
“He is undoubtedly one of the kindest, most supportive, and inspiring individuals I have ever encountered. Isn’t he wonderful? I have no patience for anyone who speaks ill of him.” Her remarks have since gained renewed attention.
Golden Globes joke revives debate over Cruise
While Cruise is undoubtedly one of the most prominent figures in Hollywood, known for his memorable performances in films such as Minority Report, Jerry Maguire, and Top Gun: Maverick, he has also been a focal point of various off-screen controversies.
His personal life has frequently drawn attention, from his infamous couch-jumping incident on Oprah in 2005, where he exuberantly expressed his love for then-girlfriend Katie Holmes, to a contentious discussion with Matt Lauer regarding psychiatry, often overshadowing his cinematic achievements.
Much of the criticism directed at Cruise has been linked to his association with the Church of Scientology.
In 2008, a leaked video surfaced featuring Cruise passionately discussing the religion. The subject resurfaced at the Golden Globes in January 2023, when host Jerrod Carmichael made a pointed remark: “Backstage, I found these three Golden Globe awards that Tom Cruise returned... I think maybe we take these three things and exchange them for the safe return of Shelly Miscavige.”
The Church of Scientology promptly refuted the implications; in fact, in 2014, the LAPD confirmed that officers had made contact with Shelly Miscavige, the spouse of Scientology leader David Miscavige, and subsequently closed the missing persons investigation. In 2018, the Church's attorneys reiterated that “Mrs. Miscavige is not missing” and condemned the allegations as “appalling.”
