Mohanlal's highly awaited film, Thudarum, holds special significance for fans of Lalettan for several reasons. A key highlight is the reunion of Mohanlal and Shobana on screen, a collaboration that has not occurred in over a decade. Interestingly, Jyotika was also considered for the role of Lalitha, the wife of Mohanlal’s character, Shanmugham. Tharun Moorthy, the director, reached out to Jyotika regarding this role. Had this partnership materialized, it would have marked Jyotika's return to Malayalam cinema following her performance in Mammootty’s acclaimed film, Kaathal: The Core. Continue reading to discover why Jyotika ultimately declined the role in Thudarum and how Shobana was cast alongside Mohanlal.

‘Jyotika was also considered for Shobana's role in Thudarum’

Thudarum Director Tharun Moorthy disclosed that his initial preference was to cast Shobana alongside Mohanlal in the film. However, he faced challenges in reaching out to Shobana, who is also a renowned dancer, which led him to explore a new pairing with Mohanlal.

“In my conversation with scriptwriter Sunil, I expressed that there was no better choice than Shobana madam. He then inquired about how we could get in touch with her. Consequently, we decided to consider a fresh pairing for Mohanlal and looked at Jyotika,” Tharun Moorthy shared in a recent interview with Red FM.

The director of Operation Java, Tharun Moorthy, shared that he visited Jyotika's residence to discuss the project. "She was quite enthusiastic. However, when we scheduled the shoot, Jyotika and Surya had already arranged a world tour. Consequently, we reached out to Shobana madam," he elaborated.

In a different context, Jyotika portrayed the role of Mammootty's character Mathew Devassy's wife in Jeo Baby's highly regarded film, Kaathal – The Core.

Thudarum release and expectations

Meanwhile, Thudarum is all set to release in theatres worldwide on April 25, 2025. Expectations are high, since the previous two films of Tharun Moorthy were much-talked-about and his collaboration with the Lucifer star is keenly looked forward to. If Thudarum turns out to be a winner at the box office, it would be Mohanlal’s second film to do so after Empuraan, which earned stellar numbers at the ticket window despite the controversies.
