Throwback Thursday: Aamir Khan's Trust in Rajkumar Hirani to Cast Sushant Singh Rajput in "PK"

2 days ago | 5 Views

It's been five years since the tragic passing of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, and people are still feeling the loss of such a bright talent taken too soon. Rajkumar Hirani, one of the first directors to work with Sushant in a film, shared his memories of what it was like to have him on board for PK. He also hinted that Aamir Khan had shown interest in Sushant. Here’s what he had to say...

Was Aamir Khan considering Sushant Singh Rajput for a role in PK?

Rajkumar Hirani hinted that Aamir Khan was interested in Sushant and wanted to cast him in PK. In the end, Aamir trusted Hirani's judgment, even though he was initially looking to bring his nephew Imran Khan into the project. It's also worth mentioning that his son Junaid Khan worked as one of the assistant directors on the film.

Rajkumar Hirani's big announcement

Rajkumar Hirani shared some interesting insights with Bombay Times, mentioning that Sushant was already on board for PK before his debut film, Kai Po Che, hit the big screen. He recalled, "We were filming with him when his first movie came out, and we all went to check it out together." This suggests that Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma, and even Sanjay Dutt recognized Sushant's talent early on and chose to collaborate with him.

A decade of PK

PK came out a decade ago and added another highlight to Hirani's filmography. It was the second time Hirani teamed up with Aamir as the lead. They still haven't joined forces for a third movie yet.

What’s the deal with the title PK?

The title PK came about pretty randomly while we were making the film. It started off as Tully, but we changed it to PK because the alien kept getting asked, “Pi ke hai kya?” whenever he did something surprising for humans.

Boman Irani was originally cast in the role later played by Saurabh Shukla

Boman Irani, who became super popular for his role as Virus in 3 Idiots, also tried out for the part of guruji in PK. However, he didn’t quite match the character, and Saurabh Shukla nailed it, so they went with a bald Shukla for the guruji role in PK.

If you want to check it out, Rajkumar Hirani's PK is streaming on SonyLIV through OTTplay Premium.
