Theatre Luminary Alok Chatterjee Passes Away: Remembering His Legacy with Irrfan Khan

Lyricist Swanand Kirkire announced on Tuesday the passing of theatre actor Alok Chatterjee. He shared a photograph of Alok on Instagram, accompanied by a heartfelt note in his memory. Alok was a contemporary of the late actor Irrfan Khan at the National School of Drama (NSD).

In the photograph, Alok Chatterjee is depicted gazing away from the camera while dressed in a formal shirt. Swanand provided a caption in both Hindi and English, stating, "Alok Chatterjee.. a remarkable actor has departed! He was a batchmate of Irrfan at NSD."
He further expressed, "If Irrfan was Kalidas, then Alok Chatterjee was Vilom! Vilom has gone to meet his Kalidas! Rest in peace, brother Alok!"

According to a report by Money Control, Alok passed away at approximately 11 PM on Monday night due to multiple organ failure. India Today has reported that he was 64 years old at the time of his death. His final rites are scheduled to take place later on Tuesday.

Alok and Irrfan were contemporaries at the National School of Drama (NSD) from 1984 to 1987, during which they both took on prominent roles in numerous theatrical productions. Alok distinguished himself as a gold medalist at NSD and received the prestigious Sangeet Natak Academy Award in recognition of his significant contributions to Indian cinema. He previously held the position of director at the Madhya Pradesh School of Drama.
Alok directed notable works such as William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, in which he also performed. Additionally, he served as an educator at both NSD and the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).
In a past interview, Alok expressed his dedication to the theatre, stating, as reported by Money Control, "I had gone to Delhi to become a performer. Had I wanted to do films, I would have gone to FTII Pune. I am living my life for theatre. I have studied at NSD, which has ingrained theatre in my very being. I am not a commodity to be sold in the market."
