The Super Bowl matchup on Sunday in New Orleans, featuring the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, is anticipated to generate significant financial benefits for the teams, the NFL, and advertisers. However, for Kendrick Lamar, the focus is not on financial gain. Despite the high-profile nature of the event, he will not receive a substantial payment for his halftime performance.

This is due to the fact that Super Bowl halftime performers, including Lamar, are compensated only at the union scale—the minimum amount guaranteed by union agreements—irrespective of the considerable exposure and honor associated with the performance, as noted by Forbes.

If the latest contract from the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists is applied, the daily rate would amount to $1,000, according to People Magazine.

Although there are no financial incentives for the performers, they remain enthusiastic about participating in the halftime show for one primary reason. The Super Bowl platform allows artists to showcase their music to an audience exceeding 100 million viewers in the United States alone.

Additionally, they are not burdened with the costs of organizing a large-scale production, as the NFL covers essential travel and production expenses. For instance, the NFL reportedly invested $13 million in the halftime show featuring Jennifer Lopez and Shakira in 2020, as reported by CBS News.

Why NFL does not give paychecks to performers?

The NFL has maintained a long-standing policy of compensating Super Bowl performers solely at the union scale rate. This approach prevents the organization from expending significant sums on high-profile halftime show artists, who have included notable figures such as Usher, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Prince, Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Paul McCartney in previous years. Conversely, there have been instances where artists have sought payment for the opportunity to perform, recognizing the substantial exposure that accompanies such an event.

In 2015, the NFL reportedly reached out to prominent artists, including Rihanna, Coldplay, and Katy Perry, proposing that they pay a fee in return for the chance to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show. Ultimately, all three artists declined this offer.

While Perry did agree to perform, she firmly rejected the notion of paying for the opportunity, stating to Forbes, “I want to be able to say I played the Super Bowl based on my talents and my merit, thank you very much.”
