How did the Silver Surfer’s character end up being a woman?

The upcoming movie will introduce the Silver Surfer as a female character, portrayed by Garner. Although this is not the first instance of a Marvel character's gender being altered within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it marks a significant change.

It is important to clarify that Marvel is not simply gender-swapping the Silver Surfer; rather, they are introducing a new character to take on this role. Traditionally, the Silver Surfer is known as Norrin Radd, a noble being from the idyllic planet Zenn-La who makes a profound sacrifice to protect his world from Galactus.

In exchange for saving Zenn-La and the life of his beloved, Shalla-Bal, Radd becomes the herald of the cosmic entity, undergoing a transformation into the iconic silver-skinned figure recognized by fans. Therefore, Garner will not be portraying Radd, but rather Shalla-Bal, as reported by IGN.

What does this mean for the plot in the MCU?

In the upcoming version set to be unveiled to fans, Shalla-Bal takes on a pivotal role in the deal, becoming the one tasked with delivering other worlds to her insatiable master for consumption, while Radd remains behind to govern Zenn-La. Notably, there exists a variant within the Marvel multiverse where both Radd and Shalla-Bal assume the mantle of the Silver Surfer.

In the Earth X storyline, which debuted in 1999, Radd transfers a portion of his cosmic abilities to Shalla, and together they function as dual heralds for Galactus. In a significant twist, this iteration of Galactus is revealed to be a future, god-like evolution of Franklin Richards—the offspring of Reed Richards and Sue Storm—introducing an unexpected familial link to the broader cosmic saga.
