Actor Sadia Khateeb is receiving widespread acclaim for her role in The Diplomat. In the film, she portrays an Indian Muslim woman trapped in Pakistan, alongside co-star John Abraham. During an interview with The Indian Express, Sadia disclosed that she was originally considered for the lead role in Laila Majnu, but lost the opportunity after inadvertently blocking the casting call number.

What Sadia said

When questioned about the truth of her initial offer for the role of Laila in the romantic drama film, Sadia responded, “That’s how it all began. I was studying engineering at the time. Being from Jammu & Kashmir, I had no experience in acting. When I was approached to portray Laila, I dismissed the call, believing it to be a scam. Just think about it—if you reside in a small town, how would you know who is casting in Mumbai? It could easily be a case of human trafficking!”

The role of Laila ultimately went to actress Triptii Dimri, while the film also featured Avinash Tiwary.

The actress revealed that she did not have the opportunity to meet the real individual upon whom her character is based before the film's release. "I first encountered her at a promotional podcast after the film came out. My director was adamant that I should not meet her beforehand, as he wanted me to adhere strictly to the script. I focused on conveying genuine human emotions, reflecting on how I would react if I were in a similar predicament, while also heeding my director's vision. He had met Uzma and possessed a deeper understanding of the character. I integrated my insights into his narrative and fully embraced the role," she explained.

Set against the backdrop of India-Pakistan relations, The Diplomat delves into themes of diplomacy and the personal struggles faced by diplomats. The film features notable performances by Sharib Hashmi, Kumud Mishra, and Revathy, and is directed by Shivam Nair.
