The Waking of a Nation is among the limited web projects scheduled for streaming this week. Directed by Ram Madhvani, the series features Taaruk Raina and Nikita Dutta in prominent roles. Set against the historical context of the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre, Nikita portrays the character of Poonam, which she has characterized as one of the most 'powerful' roles she has ever played on screen.

In an interview with Mid-Day, Nikita Dutta opened up about essaying the role of Poonam in Ram Madhvani's The Waking of a Nation. Spilling beans about her character, the actress said, "She is a strong, bold, and fierce woman—not in the stereotypical loud Punjabi way. He’s chosen to show me as a woman who has a voice, who worked back in the day, and as someone who can take control of situations within her capabilities."

Dutta remarked that opportunities for an artist to portray roles like that of Poonam are rare. The actress expressed her gratitude for being a significant contributor to the film industry. She also recounted her experience collaborating with director Ram Madhvani, whom she described as one of the most exceptional filmmakers she has encountered.

"Few directors provide substantial depth and importance to their female characters, but examining his body of work—from Neerja [2016] to Aarya—reveals that women are depicted in powerful roles," Nikita noted.

The Waking of a Nation seeks to reinterpret historical events through the perspective of the Hunter Commission's investigation. Produced by Ram and Amita Madhvani, the series features a talented cast that includes Sahil Mehta, Ranjit Singh, Bhawsheel Singh Sahni, Ananyabrata Chakravorty, Man Singh Karamati, among others.
