Tharun Moorthy is presently the standout figure in Malayalam cinema. The director, with just three films to his credit, is being celebrated for his skill in crafting Thudarum, a film that has provided Malayalam audiences with a generous dose of the versatile Mohanlal, which they are thoroughly enjoying.
Tharun commenced his filmmaking career with Operation Java, a film centered on actual cyber crime case investigations, which he subsequently followed with the courtroom drama Saudi Vellakka, a film that clinched a National Award for Best Malayalam film. He has now completed Thudarum, a family drama thriller that brought Mohanlal back together with his Thenmavin Kombathu co-star Shobana.
One consistent element across all of Tharun’s films to date has been actor Binu Pappu, the son of the late actor Kuthiravattam Pappu. Binu has played crucial roles in all three films, with his police character in Thudarum receiving significant acclaim from viewers. Tharun’s upcoming fourth directorial project has already been confirmed, which he and Binu disclosed during an interview.
Tharun Moorthy's film with Asif Ali to go on floors by end of 2025
Tharun will helm a film inspired by a narrative from Binu, featuring Asif Ali in the lead role. Sources indicate that this movie, an action-packed entertainer, will take place in Bengaluru, the city where Binu has resided and worked for numerous years before pursuing a career in film. With Ashiq Usman as the producer, filming is expected to commence by the end of 2025, and pre-production is set to start in May.
In Thudarum, Binu not only performed as an actor but also managed the production details, while also acting as Tharun’s creative advisor. The actor, who has worked as an associate director on various Malayalam films, does not dismiss the idea of becoming a director, but that decision will come only after his upcoming project with Tharun.
Thudarum debuted in cinemas on April 25 to outstanding reviews. It marks Mohanlal's second release this year, following L2 Empuraan, which, coincidentally, was released on OTT a day prior to Thudarum's theatrical release.
