Music composer Thaman S, known for his recent projects including Baby John, Game Changer, and Daaku Maharaaj, made remarks regarding marriage that were met with disapproval online. During an appearance on Nikhil Vijayendra Simha’s podcast, Thaman was inquired about the appropriate timing for marriage, to which he responded in a manner that many found unappealing.
Thaman S’ stance on marriage
Thaman expressed his reluctance to recommend marriage at this time, citing the increasing challenges associated with sustaining such commitments. He articulated, "Currently, I advise against marriage. It has become difficult as women are seeking independence and do not wish to be beholden to anyone. This shift has led to a loss of a certain type of societal dynamic among women."
He further elaborated on the impact of social media, particularly Instagram, on people's perceptions of relationships. He noted, "In the post-COVID era, there has been a significant change. I believe Instagram plays a detrimental role in this regard. We tend to showcase only the beautiful aspects of life, neglecting the struggles that accompany them. At this moment, I cannot endorse marriage; the standards have become perplexing. I observe a rising trend of divorces, which has become commonplace, as individuals are increasingly unwilling to compromise."
Internet reacts
A video of the discussion reemerged on Instagram, featuring a page that concurred with Thaman's assertion that "we lost innocent girls." However, the comments section was filled with discontent, with one user stating, “Oh my! Are you suggesting that marriages are discouraged because women aspire to be independent? Is it because they have ceased to be innocent? Oh, I see! You mean they have stopped being naive? I did not anticipate this perspective from you, teddy anna. You resemble a misogynist.”
Another commenter remarked, “Innocence is merely a fetishization of inexperience.” One individual ridiculed Thaman for claiming he might be using the "right words," stating, “So, ‘we lost obedient girls’ is the phrase you were searching for?” A humorous comment noted, “Bro discovered feminism post-COVID,” while another referred to him as a “Boomer uncle.”
One frustrated commenter felt that Thaman was exhibiting a typical mindset, writing, “He conveniently attributes the blame to women's desire for independence! Does this imply that independent women are unworthy of companionship and love? He is merely reinforcing the conventional male mentality in marriages where control is paramount.” Another user expressed confusion, stating, “What on earth does being under one mean? It appears you have a fundamentally misguided understanding of what marriage entails.”
Thaman is now working on films like Jaat, The Raja Saab, OG and Akhanda 2.
