The stampede that occurred during the premiere of Pushpa 2: The Rule, featuring Allu Arjun, at Sandhya Theatre in Hyderabad appears to have significant consequences. According to Live Law, during the consideration of four petitions challenging benefit shows for both Pushpa 2 and Ram Charan's Game Changer, the Telangana High Court has imposed restrictions on children's entry into theatres, prohibiting access before 11 am and after 11 pm.
Telangana High Court’s directive on theatre timings
On Monday, the High Court issued a directive to the state government and theatre operators, prohibiting the admission of children under the age of 16 to screenings scheduled before 11 am and after 11 pm. This ruling was delivered by Justice B Vijaysen Reddy during the consideration of two petitions challenging the unusual screening times and the increase in ticket prices for benefit shows related to Pushpa 2: The Rule and Game Changer and Game Changer.
The judge noted that, in accordance with Licence Condition 12(43) outlined in Form B Licence for Cinematograph Exhibition under the AP Cinema (Regulations) Rules, 1970, theatre operators are prohibited from allowing any performance or screening of films via cinematograph before 8:40 am or after 1:30 am. It was emphasized that children should not be allowed to view films during early morning or late-night hours.
Additionally, the court instructed the Principal Secretary of the Home Department to engage with all relevant stakeholders and implement the necessary measures in this matter.
The Pushpa 2 stampede incident
The High Court has strongly criticized the state government for permitting ticket price increases and additional screenings of Game Changer, particularly in light of the tragic stampede during Pushpa 2: The Rule, which resulted in the death of a woman and left her young son in critical condition. Both Arjun and the theatre management were taken into custody in connection with this incident, although the actor has since been released on bail.
In response, the state government has opted to prohibit screenings between 1 am and 8 am. Nevertheless, the latest ruling will impose further limitations on the audience allowed to attend special screenings.
