Tamannaah Bhatia Discusses the Ongoing Struggle for Women's Empowerment

Tamannaah Bhatia believes the entertainment industry's slow move towards gender equality and equal pay is a positive development. Still, she thinks there's an ongoing challenge in empowering women, as there's often a need to emphasize that “we are women and we are facing struggles.”
In a recent chat with an online media outlet, Tamannaah opened up about her experiences as a woman in the entertainment world and how she juggles her career between Bollywood and South Indian cinema.
Exploring gender equality in the entertainment industry
Tamannaah is a strong advocate for gender equality and pay parity, encouraging women to embrace their own empowerment and individuality while motivating others to do the same.
"It's definitely improving. Things are getting a lot better. Some aspects of the awareness movement are really benefiting us. Women need to take charge of their own identities," Tamannaah shares.
She continues, "I think we’re putting in a lot of effort. There seems to be an ongoing struggle to empower us, and we often feel the need to highlight that we are women facing challenges. Ultimately, it’s us who keep bringing this perspective to light."
Tamannaah highlights the significance of personal empowerment, suggesting that taking responsibility for oneself can foster equality and empowerment.
"But I believe it’s crucial to take control of the situation as much as possible, rather than relying on large groups to create change. True empowerment will come from individuals, and those individuals can inspire others. Hopefully, one day, we’ll all genuinely feel equal and empowered," says the actress, who recently stole the spotlight as a showstopper for Akshat Bansal's Bloni during a fashion show in Vizag, part of the Blenders Pride Fashion Tour.
Balancing a career in Bollywood and the South Indian film industry
Tamannaah kicked off her career in South cinema with the Telugu movie Sree in 2005 and the Tamil film Kedi in 2006, all while she was still a teenager. Since then, she has established a notable presence in both the Hindi film industry and Southern cinema.
She has starred in hit Tamil and Telugu films like Happy Days, Kalloori, Padikkadavan, Paiyaa, Veeram, and the Baahubali series. In Bollywood, Tamannaah has been featured in movies such as Himmatwala, Entertainment, Babli Bouncer, Plan A Plan B, and Lust Stories 2.
When asked about her ability to adapt to various industries and audiences, she shared, “I believe there’s a universal human emotion that connects us all, no matter our background or culture.”
“Cinema is a powerful way to tap into that. While I select stories that resonate with us, I also think the core emotion is crucial. For everyone, a mother is a mother, and those fundamental relationships remain unchanged. I believe that consistently channeling that is a more effective way to connect with people,” the 35-year-old actress explained.
Reflecting on her self-criticism
Tamannaah has been a strong advocate for body positivity and self-acceptance, challenging the typical beauty norms found in the entertainment world. She embraces the fact that her appearance sets her apart from others.
"I believe we all tend to be our own worst critics. Anyone in the public eye or on social media is likely aware of how they come across. We often feel more secure when we blend in with others because it seems more acceptable. However, to make a real difference, you need to tap into what makes you unique," she explains.
The actress adds, "It's like wanting everyone to admire you while also seeking safety and acceptance. If you aim for acceptance, you might end up conforming to others' standards of what a 'good body' or 'appropriate fashion' looks like. But if you truly want to inspire others, you need to embrace your individuality. Accepting the best version of yourself, whatever that may look like for each person, can lead to a greater impact. I recognize that I may look different from others, but I see that as my strength."
