Tahira Kashyap, who has transitioned from author to filmmaker, has candidly discussed her experience with breast cancer. The director, who is married to actor Ayushmann Khurrana, frequently provided updates regarding her health journey on her Instagram account. Nevertheless, she recently disclosed that one of these updates did not sit well with her parents.

In a recent interview with Filmfare, Tahira shared her experience of losing her hair due to chemotherapy and the subsequent reaction from her parents when she posted a picture of her bald head online. She recounted, “My parents were quite distressed when I shared my bald image following my cancer diagnosis. For many, a woman’s baldness is often viewed as a calamity, and they refused to communicate with me, insisting that I remove the photo. However, I stood my ground, stating, ‘I am celebrating this moment, and you must understand that.’ They genuinely believed I had lost my senses, questioning how I could find joy in a physical ailment.”

Tahira explained that in an effort to reconnect with her parents, she initiated a video call to reassure them of her well-being. “I was uncertain about how to engage them, so I video-called my mother to show her my current appearance. I said, ‘This is me now, and I embrace it.’ I even wore sunglasses, which made her chuckle and smile. I emphasized that this is life: I am content, and it is important for you to share in my happiness. They remained somewhat perplexed by the concept of ‘feeling happy,’” Tahira remarked.

Tahira received a breast cancer diagnosis in 2018. The filmmaker shared this news on her Instagram account and openly discussed her treatment journey, which included undergoing a mastectomy. She also shared a photograph of her post-surgery scar on social media and has actively spoken about her experience to raise awareness. In 2024, Tahira made her directorial debut with the Amazon Prime Video film Sharmajee Ki Beti.
