The casting process for a movie is quite the show. Names get thrown around, auditions happen, and sometimes everything just clicks, but other times, it doesn’t. Each film has its own tale of what worked and what didn’t. Baghban stands out as one of the most legendary Hindi films ever, with a huge following on satellite TV. The legendary Amitabh Bachchan and the stunning Hema Malini brought their characters to life, making the film unforgettable for years to come. It’s hard to believe you haven’t seen it, even if it wasn’t your first choice! But here’s a fun fact: Tabu was actually the original pick for Hema Malini’s part.

Tabu's Reasons for Turning Down Baghban?

Sure thing! Here’s a different take on that text:

Absolutely, you heard it right! Baghban, directed by Ravi Chopra and co-written and produced by B. R. Chopra, turned out to be a huge hit at the box office. Although it didn’t get rave reviews when it first came out, audiences later fell in love with it, making it one of the most beloved Hindi films ever. Recently, in a chat with Pinkvilla, producer Renu Chopra, who is also the wife of filmmaker Ravi Chopra, shared that they initially wanted Tabu for a role, but she passed on it. Keep reading to find out why.

Renu Chopra reminisced about the time they pitched the story to Tabu: “We had Tabu in mind for the casting, and she wanted to hear the script. She was so moved that she cried. She really connected with the story. I thought for sure she would agree. But someone next to me pointed out, ‘When Tabu cries while hearing a script, she usually doesn’t take the role.’

Renu confirmed that Tabu turned down the role for a good reason, saying, “I asked her, ‘Are you really not going to do the film?’ She mentioned she loved the story but didn’t want to take on the role of a mother of four. She added, ‘I have my whole career ahead of me, so Ravi ji, please forgive me.’”

Later in the chat, Renu Chopra shared that two years after the movie came out, Tabu watched it with her aunt in Hyderabad and felt regret about her choice. “When the film hit theaters, Tabu was in Hyderabad and went to see it with her aunt and uncle. She told them she had been offered the part but turned it down. Her aunt scolded her, saying, ‘I’ll hit you with my slipper! Why did you say no to this film?’”

But it wasn't the end of the road. Amitabh Bachchan and Tabu eventually teamed up for Cheeni Kum, directed by R. Balki, creating a standout partnership.
