March 31 marked Taapsee Pannu's Naam Shabana eighth anniversary. The actor made a remark about how she felt everyone was doing a spy thriller these days, alluding to her film. She also mentioned that she had starred in the spy thriller back when it wasn't in fashion.

Naam Shabana – Pioneering spy thriller

Naam Shabana featured Taapsee in the leading role. The film depicts her undergoing rigorous training to take down a dangerous arms dealer after being enlisted by an intelligence agency. Throughout the project, she demonstrated her versatility as an actress by performing thrilling stunts and action sequences.

The actor elaborated on the origin of the concept for Naam Shabana by referencing the smash hit film Baby, in which she appeared in a supporting role and starred alongside Akshay Kumar. After her character in Baby received such positive feedback, the producers decided to base an entire film around Shabana, aka Meera. As she celebrated the eight-year anniversary of her film, Taapsee candidly admitted that there was no prequel or sequel.

Taapsee Pannu's reluctance to return to the genre

The actress acknowledged that, although she has been a pioneer in the genre, she is reluctant to revisit it due to concerns about diluting its impact. In reality, action-oriented spy thrillers have not been widely embraced. However, the espionage thriller has gained significant traction recently. Given the time that has passed, if she were to reintroduce it, audiences might question, "Why are you revisiting this?" Taapsee is cautious about altering the genre and potentially harming its reputation, especially since she has already achieved remarkable success in the past.

Naam Shabana is now available for streaming on Netflix and ZEE5 (OTTplay Premium).

For those unfamiliar, producers often show a preference for the spy thriller genre. Its popularity surged following Shah Rukh Khan's record-breaking return in the 2023 film Pathaan. Shortly after its release, Yash Raj Films announced the creation of its YRF spy universe, which will include upcoming titles such as War 2 and Pathaan vs Tiger. Additionally, producers have recently backed Alpha, the first spy thriller featuring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, marking the network's inaugural female-led project.

Gandhari signifies Taapsee's return to the action-thriller genre, where she portrays a mother fighting to rescue her abducted child. To authentically depict a mother's fierce instincts, she has executed all the stunts herself. The film is set to be released on Netflix later this year.
