When actress Ramya established her production company, Applebox Studios, she emphasized her commitment to highlighting women's stories. Her inaugural project, Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye, was penned and directed by Raj B Shetty and depicted the transformative experiences of a palliative care centre counsellor in both her personal and professional life. Over a year has passed since the film's debut, yet Ramya has not revealed her next undertaking.

Ramya: Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye came when OTTs were no longer buying content

Ramya: Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye emerged at a time when OTT platforms were no longer acquiring content. However, the transition to producing was not without its challenges for Ramya. “We received numerous accolades, but did not generate profit,” she remarked during the Deccan Herald 2040 summit. She noted that Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye was initially intended as a direct-to-OTT release, coinciding with a period when platforms were actively seeking content. Unfortunately, by the time the film was completed, the landscape had shifted. Major OTT services had become disinterested in Kannada content, ceased outright acquisitions, or were focusing their budgets solely on films featuring prominent stars. “Bagheera was included on Netflix because it was part of a package deal from the production house,” she explained.

Currently, a theatrical release is essential before OTT platforms will even consider a project. Ramya mentioned that she ultimately received a premium offer of Rs 7 per minute for pay-per-view access to Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye, a figure that has since diminished to Rs 2-4, which she believes is insufficient for small to mid-budget filmmakers to recoup their investments. Despite the lack of interest from OTT platforms in Kannada cinema, Ramya expressed that she has yet to discover an engaging subject for her next production.

Interestingly, Ramya had contemplated making her return to acting with Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye but ultimately opted against it, believing that a relatively new talent would be more appropriate for the role. Siri Ravikumar portrayed Prerana in the film.
