Swara Bhasker on Chhaava Controversy: ‘History’s Glory Shouldn’t Mask Today’s Mistakes’

Actor Swara Bhasker has provided clarification regarding her tweet in which she criticized a "brain and soul-dead society" for expressing greater outrage over a fictional torture scene involving Hindus than over the fatalities resulting from two recent stampedes. She made references to the film Chhaava, featuring Vicky Kaushal, as well as the stampede incidents at the Maha Kumbh and the New Delhi Railway station, although she did not specify any details.

Swara Bhasker clarifies her tweet over Chhaava

On Friday, Swara took to X (formerly Twitter) to urge individuals not to exploit the "glory of the past to obscure the mistakes and failures of the present." She expressed her admiration for the "courageous legacy and contributions" of Chhatrapati Shivaji.

In her tweet, she stated, "My tweet has sparked considerable debate and unnecessary misunderstanding. I unequivocally respect the courageous legacy and contributions of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, particularly his principles of social justice and respect for women."

Swara talks about past, present

My perspective is that while it is commendable to celebrate our history, it is essential not to exploit the achievements of the past to obscure the shortcomings and failures of the present. A comprehensive understanding of history should serve to bring people together rather than create divisions or distract from contemporary challenges, she remarked.

"I regret if my previous tweet has caused any offence. Like any other proud Indian, I take pride in our history. It should serve as a source of unity and empower us to strive for a better and more inclusive future," Swara concluded.

What Swara said earlier

On Wednesday, Swara expressed her views, stating, "A society that exhibits greater outrage towards the dramatized and partially fictionalized portrayal of Hindu suffering from 500 years ago, rather than responding to the tragic loss of life due to a stampede and mismanagement, followed by the reported handling of corpses with a JCB bulldozer, reflects a society devoid of both intellect and compassion. #IYKYK."

On January 29, a stampede in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, resulted in the deaths of at least 30 individuals, with 60 others sustaining injuries. Additionally, another 18 people perished in a stampede at a crowded railway station in New Delhi on February 15.

About Chhaava

Chhaava is helmed by director Laxmikant Utekar and features Rashmika Mandanna in a prominent role. The film has achieved significant success, surpassing ₹200 crore at the domestic box office. Vicky portrays the character of Maratha emperor Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire.
