Actor Suriya, who was recently featured in Kanguva, is collaborating with director Karthik Subbaraj for his upcoming film titled Retro, which is scheduled for release on May 1. In anticipation of the premiere, the production team has been sharing intriguing stories and experiences from the filming locations. Recently, the creators of Retro reminisced about the time Suriya filmed scenes on a jail set constructed in Chennai.
Suriya reflects on his experience of living in a jail for the shooting of Retro
A significant portion of the film is set within a jail, prompting plans to construct sets in locations such as Shimoga Jail, the CSI Building in Thiruvallur, Tuticorin, and Cochin. Ultimately, Karthik Subbaraj opted to create a retro-style jail within the Chennai BSNL office. Thanks to the art direction team, the space was transformed into a jail complete with a warden’s office, prison cells, a library, a kitchen, and a visitors’ area.
The production team recalled Suriya's initial reaction upon entering the set, noting that despite his familiarity with the BSNL office, he was unable to recognize it. “I’ve been coming here for years. How did you bring the Madurai jail here? Super ya, Karthi!” he remarked, with Karthik attributing the success to the art team.
The makers of Retro captured action sequences and the song "Kannadi Poove." Suriya expressed, “For five days, I felt like I was living inside a real jail. I experienced every moment, every emotion… and danced it all out.”
