The Academy recently shared some details about the eligibility requirements for the upcoming 97th Academy Awards. According to their press release, to qualify for the general entry categories, feature films need to debut in a commercial theater in at least one of six major U.S. cities: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, or Atlanta. This has to happen between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024, and the film must run for at least seven consecutive days in the same theater. Also, the film should be longer than 40 minutes.

It's important to understand that just meeting the eligibility criteria doesn't guarantee an Oscar nomination. For a feature film to get nominated, it has to go through a selection process where members from specific branches—like the actors, editors, and directors—evaluate its chances. Only those in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences can nominate and vote for films in their respective categories. When it comes to Best Picture, they use a preferential ballot system, allowing nominees to be ranked from one to ten, which helps narrow down the options.

This year's voting kicks off on January 8 and wraps up on January 12. The nominations for the 2025 Oscars will be announced on Friday, January 17, and the 97th Academy Awards are set for Sunday, March 2, at the Dolby Theatre.
