Sooraj Barjatya, the legendary filmmaker known for his family-focused hits, opened up about his feelings regarding the upcoming web series Bada Naam Karenge, which will be available on Sony LIV. This moment is particularly meaningful for Barjatya, as it signifies a major change in how his family-friendly stories will connect with a wider audience through digital platforms.
He expressed heartfelt thanks to Sony LIV, sharing how the platform approached Rajshri Productions with an exciting idea. "Honestly, this is such an emotional moment for me. I owe a lot to Sony LIV... they called us and said, ‘We want a Rajshri show for a web series.’ They mentioned wanting to bring Hum Saath Saath Hai and Vivah into the digital realm to reach more viewers... Nowadays, people watch web series from their homes, so they were looking for a show that families could enjoy together on a big screen. I was genuinely moved."
The filmmaker also pointed out the changing landscape of content, especially in the OTT world, which has been largely focused on crime, urban stories, and themes for younger audiences. He sees the request from Sony LIV in 2020 to create something different as a pivotal moment. "Typically, everyone thinks OTT is all about crime, urban, and youth themes. To be asked for a clutter-breaker in 2020 was a significant moment for me because I truly believe every genre has its place."
He had high praise for Palash, the director of the web series, commending him for bringing a fresh and youthful angle to the project. “I have immense respect and affection for Palash, our director, who has infused this show with a youthful perspective. It’s a fantastic beginning for us."
Barjatya also highlighted how the web series format allows for more flexibility. "We create films and TV shows, but some stories just can't fit into two and a half hours or even a six-month run. The 9-10 episode structure of a web series is a big leap forward, and we're excited to explore more projects like this."
Even with this new approach, Barjatya made it clear that the fundamental values of Rajshri Productions—family, tradition, and love—will stay the same. "Our goal is straightforward: to uphold the values that people associate with Rajshri. Perhaps that's why audiences look to us for this. We have new, young creators joining us to help carry our vision forward while preserving those core values."
Looking back at Rajshri's legacy and its ability to adapt, he mentioned, “My sons are ready to step up. They, along with emerging filmmakers like Palash, are encouraged to bring fresh ideas and demonstrate how family-centric stories can be told in exciting ways in the digital realm.”
Bada Naam Karenge follows the journey of Rishabh and Surbhi (played by Ritik Ghanshani and Ayesha Kaduskar), a Gen-Z couple aiming to chase their dreams while staying connected to their traditional family values. Directed by Palash Vasvani, known for his work on Gullak, the series is set to premiere on Sony LIV on February 7.
