Bollywood icon Sunny Deol recently spoke out about the rising issue of cinema becoming overly commercialized, expressing his disappointment that the essence of filmmaking is being overshadowed by financial motives. While promoting the trailer for his new film Jaat in Mumbai, Deol shared his views on how the film industry has evolved, particularly noting the impact of corporate involvement on creativity.

He reminisced about a time when filmmaking was fueled by passion and artistic vision. “There was a time when a director would pitch a story to a producer, and if they liked it, they would fully commit to making it,” he recalled. Deol pointed out that this organic, creative process began to shift with the entry of corporate entities into the film scene. “Then corporate interests came in, and suddenly everything turned commercial. The art of cinema became about profits, and the enthusiasm for making films faded,” he remarked.

Deol believes this transformation has led to a focus on profit over quality storytelling. “Everything became a means to make money, and people got caught up in that,” he noted. He expressed concern that those who genuinely love cinema, who have a true passion for it, are being pushed aside in favor of financial interests.

Despite his concerns, Deol remains optimistic about the future of the industry. “It’s a cycle; things will change, even if it takes time,” he said, suggesting that there may be a return to the roots of creative storytelling, free from the heavy emphasis on commercial success. His comments resonate with many who feel that the true spirit of cinema is slowly fading in today’s profit-driven filmmaking landscape.
