Despite numerous Hollywood events being postponed or cancelled as a result of the ongoing fires in the Los Angeles region, the Sundance Film Festival is determined to proceed with its 11-day event scheduled for next week in Park City, Utah.
Sundance Film Festival not postponed
In a correspondence sent on Monday to registrants in Southern California, Amanda Kelso, the CEO of the Institute, along with festival director Eugene Hernandez, expressed, “While we may grieve, it is essential that we continue forward.” Recipients of the letter were encouraged to share their experiences regarding the impact of the fires.
Michelle Satter, a founding director of the Sundance Institute and its artist programs, disclosed on social media last week that she lost her residence in the Palisades fire. Satter is among those being recognized at the festival’s opening gala scheduled for January 24.
Sundance is not the only significant event on the American entertainment calendar that will proceed as intended. The Grammy Awards, the most prestigious event in the music industry, will also take place as planned and will be broadcast on television, as confirmed by organizers on Monday.
Oscars may be cancelled for the first time in 96 years
The Oscars are currently at risk of cancellation for the first time in 96 years. The organization responsible for the awards has already announced the cancellation of its lavish nominees' luncheon. Reports indicate that the awards ceremony itself may not take place this year. An insider informed the Sun that the board's primary concern is to avoid the appearance of celebration while many residents of Los Angeles are experiencing profound grief and loss. Even if the wildfires were to diminish in the coming week, the reality remains that the city is enduring significant pain, which is expected to persist for months. Consequently, the leadership has determined that the focus will shift towards support and fundraising when appropriate opportunities arise.
The wildfires in Los Angeles have resulted in the destruction of thousands of homes, with 24 fatalities reported. Additionally, there are numerous individuals unaccounted for, and officials anticipate that this number may rise. Notable figures such as Anthony Hopkins, Mel Gibson, and Billy Crystal have lost their residences due to the fires, leading to a halt in production for both television and film.
