Sudip Sharma, the creator of Paatal Lok, is currently enjoying the praise garnered by the second season of the series, which premiered on Prime Video last week and received overwhelmingly positive reviews. In a recent discussion with OTTplay, Sudip expressed his apprehensions regarding the depiction of violence in mainstream Indian cinema, noting that the violence portrayed often appears to have 'no consequences.'

What Sudip said

During the interview, Sudip expressed his concerns regarding the portrayal of violence, stating, “At some point, violence has become an objective in itself within mainstream cinema, which is troubling to me. It genuinely disturbs me. If the violence depicted on screen carries no repercussions, it poses a significant issue. Real-life violence has real consequences. Even a brief glimpse of a street altercation can leave a lasting impression. The very notion that one individual can inflict harm on another is impactful. In my youth, I was exposed to violence up close—not due to my aggressive tendencies, but because I grew up in a challenging environment. I resided in Assam during the 1980s and 1990s and experienced the ramifications of violence directly.”

'One man enters a hotel with a gun and kills 150 people'

The director expressed concerns regarding the current portrayal of violence in cinema, stating, “Recently, we have become numb to the excessive violence depicted in films that often lack repercussions. A man enters a hotel armed and takes the lives of 150 individuals, yet there is no inquiry into the whereabouts of law enforcement. Why is this issue not being addressed? Why is this individual being celebrated as a hero? Why are we not critically examining the ethics of his actions? This, in my view, is a significant concern.”

Paatal Lok season 2 premiered on Prime Video on January 17, featuring performances by Jaideep Ahlawat, Ishwak Singh, Gul Panag, Tillotama Shome, Nagesh Kukunoor, and Jahnu Barua, among others.
