Subhash Ghai is recognized for directing some of the most memorable films in Bollywood, such as Pardes and Khalnayak. He was a prominent figure in the film industry during the 1980s and 1990s. Recently, he made a significant statement regarding the Hindi film industry, including the reasons behind his decision to step away from filmmaking. Here is a summary of his insights.

Subhash Ghai on quitting films

Subhash Ghai ceased his filmmaking endeavors upon realizing a decline in the public's passion for cinema. In a conversation with Game Changers, he remarked, "I stopped making films because I don't see the love for cinema anymore - not in people, not even in my own team. They are all just working."

Deadline-driven industry shooed Subhash Ghai away from filmmaking

Reflecting on an experience with a writer, the filmmaker, known for classics like Khalnayak, Pardes, and Taal (all available for streaming on OTTplay Premium), recounted how he provided a concept for a story. The writer assured him that the story would be ready in 15 days and the first draft in three days, while also insisting on receiving his full payment upfront. This situation left Ghai feeling exasperated.

WhatsApp and Email culture frustrates Subhash Ghai

During the same interview, Subhash Ghai voiced his dissatisfaction with the prevalent use of WhatsApp and email in the industry. He stated, "They say you send me on email, that is enough. Whatsapp mein toh script aur dialogue likhe hai aaj kal." He believes that this shift has led actors to prioritize financial rewards over artistic integrity, resulting in a lack of new superstars in recent years. Ghai contends that the only actor who has approached stardom since the era of the Khans is Ranbir Kapoor.

Subhash Ghai's film had introduced Shahid Kapoor

Subhash Ghai played a pivotal role in introducing Shahid Kapoor to the film industry. In his film Taal, Shahid appeared as a backup dancer. Although the actor achieved significant recognition through his music video Aankhon Mein, it was his participation in the song Kahin Aag Lage Lag Jaaye, alongside Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, that garnered him attention years later. Shahid later disclosed that he had experienced a motorcycle accident prior to the shoot, which left him anxious about sharing the screen with Aishwarya. It is noteworthy that Shahid and Aishwarya did not collaborate again after Taal.
