Stan Lee, the legendary figure of Marvel Comics and a trailblazer in the industry, faced significant suffering and hardship in his later years. This aspect of his life will be explored in an upcoming documentary directed by Jon Bolerjack, titled Stan Lee: The Final Chapter. During this period, Lee was taken advantage of by former business associates for financial gain, enduring mistreatment, manipulation, and abuse.
Renowned as a comic book writer, Lee is celebrated for his contributions to Marvel Comics, having co-created iconic teams and characters such as the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the Avengers, and the X-Men. While he is cherished by fans as a Marvel icon, many are unaware of his background as a veteran.
Was Stan Lee a veteran?
Lee served in the United States Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He enlisted following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and was assigned to the Signal Corps. Initially tasked with the repair of telegraph wires and communication systems, Lee's aptitude for writing soon led to his reassignment to the Training Film Division. There, he earned the military designation of ‘Playwright,’ becoming one of only nine individuals to receive this classification.
After the conclusion of World War II, Lee returned to Timely Comics, the company where he had worked prior to his enlistment, which later became known as Marvel Comics.
In 2017, service members from Joint Base Lewis-McChord inducted Lee into the Signal Corps Regimental Association, granting him honorary membership in the 2nd Battalion 3rd Infantry Regiment.
Lee passed away in 2018 at the age of 95. Bolerjack, who served as Lee's assistant, disclosed that the writer wished for his challenges to be acknowledged. “I discussed this with him extensively, even in the later stages of his life. Many events occurred in his life, but I did not sense that he felt shame about them,” Bolerjack reportedly stated. “I believe he wanted his experiences to serve as a cautionary tale.”
