Hwang Dong Hyuk, the director of Squid Game, has conveyed his reflections regarding the unexpected Golden Globe nomination for Season 2 of the series. In a revealing interview, Hwang admitted to his initial scepticism upon receiving the news and shared his perspective that, despite the nomination, the second season is unlikely to secure an award. The nomination for Squid Game Season 2 in the Best Television Series-Drama category for the 2025 Golden Globes, announced in December before its release, took many by surprise. The selection was made after the judges were granted early access to episodes from the new season.

Hwang never believed the sequel would win at Golden Globes 2025

Hwang explained his lack of expectations regarding the sequel's potential for awards. He stated, “To be honest, I did not anticipate any accolades for Season 2 when I decided to split it into two parts—Seasons 2 and 3.” He further elaborated, “Given that the narrative is not yet complete and the message I aimed to communicate has not been fully expressed, I believed it would be challenging to achieve any awards in this situation. For recognition to be granted, the story must be presented in its entirety, which has not occurred thus far. Therefore, I had no expectations whatsoever,” as reported by Koreaboo.

He also remarked, “I was both shocked and surprised that it received a nomination even before its release. Simply being one of the six selected works feels akin to winning an award. I am very pleased with that.”

Hwang over Squid Game season 3

In discussing the forthcoming season of Squid Game, Hwang expressed his confidence that it will effectively communicate the message and narrative he aims to share with the audience. He remarked, “In Season 1, there were concurrent challenges related to COVID-19 and the Golden Globes boycott concerning diversity issues. I was unable to attend the ceremony, and only actor Oh Young Soo received recognition. This time, I feel fortunate and appreciative to have the chance to participate.”

Hwang further stated, “I do not harbour high expectations for receiving an award, but if I were to aspire towards something, it would likely be with Season 3, when the story reaches its conclusion.”
