Sooraj Barjatya Admits to Making Heroines Cry: ‘I Was a Selfish Director’
1 month ago | 5 Views
Sooraj Barjatya has made his debut in the OTT space with the romantic drama series Bada Naam Karenge. Currently engaged in promoting the series, the filmmaker recently referred to himself as a 'selfish director' during an interview with Komal Nahta on his YouTube channel, Game Changers. He reflected on his early career, recalling instances where he made actresses cry.
Sooraj Barjatya on making Bhagyashree cry
In the discussion, when prompted about his temper in real life, Sooraj reminisced about his initial rudeness in the industry, stating, "At the beginning of my career, I caused many heroines to cry. You can ask Bhagyashree; I would often raise my voice. However, I eventually learned that a productive environment thrives on love and tranquility. I invest considerable time in preparation, reading my narrations at least 200 times. I meticulously examine every costume and prop to ensure I am fully prepared for my projects. This thoroughness is why my films take five years to complete; when I am on set, my focus is solely on creation, not correction."
Sooraj says he's a ‘selfish’ director
Regarding the lengthy intervals between his films, Sooraj acknowledged that this is partly due to his approach as a director. He stated, "I am quite selfish in my role because I refuse to begin until I feel fully prepared. This has been my philosophy from the outset. The immersive experience of watching films like Raj Kapoor’s Sangam or Bobby necessitates extensive preparation. I do not prioritize box office numbers; if I did, one might consider me foolish. As a director, I remain deeply involved in every dialogue and do not follow choreographers without scrutiny; I require everything in written form. Unlike visual directors such as Sanjay Leela Bhansali or Mani Ratnam, my strength lies in storytelling. I prioritize narrative over visuals, ensuring that every creative decision is vetted through me, which contributes to the time-consuming nature of my process."
Sooraj Barjatya debut, recent work
Sooraj Barjatya's initial foray into filmmaking occurred with his directorial debut, Maine Pyaar Kiya, which featured Bhagyashree and Salman Khan in the principal roles. This film achieved significant commercial success. Following this, he directed several highly acclaimed films, such as Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! , Hum Saath-Saath Hain, Vivah, and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, among others.
Currently, he has ventured into the realm of digital streaming as a showrunner for SonyLIV’s original series Bada Naam Karenge. Directed by Palash Vaswani, this romantic drama includes a cast featuring Ritik Ghanshan, Ayesha Kaduskar, Rajesh Tailang, Priyamvada Kant, Anjana Sukhani, Gyanendra Tripathi, and Kanwaljit Singh. The series delves into the difficulties encountered by two generations as they strive to understand and accommodate one another.
