Sonu Nigam on AR Rahman: "He Keeps His Distance and Focuses on Work"

3 months ago | 5 Views

Singer Sonu Nigam has collaborated with Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman on numerous memorable Bollywood tracks. Recently, Sonu offered his perspective on Rahman's character, indicating that Rahman is not widely recognized for his amiability. Rather, Sonu emphasized that Rahman tends to concentrate deeply on his artistic endeavours.

What did Sonu say

In a recent interview with O2 India, Sonu discussed his observations of Rahman and his personality traits.

Sonu remarked, “He does not engage in relationships. He is not the type of person to form connections. He remains reserved and does not open up to anyone, at least not in my experience. Perhaps he shares more with his long-time friends who know him as Dileep, but I have not witnessed him being open or forming relationships with others. He is not particularly sociable; his focus is primarily on his work.”

Reflecting on their time together during a tour across the United States, Sonu noted that their interactions were limited to polite exchanges throughout the journey.

Additionally, Sonu emphasized Rahman's strong sense of professionalism. He pointed out that Rahman avoids speaking ill of others and dedicates himself entirely to his art.

Sonu stated, “He is not one to engage in gossip, and this is not a flaw. It is simply his nature. He shows little interest in my life or anyone else's, and he prefers to keep his own life private. He possesses a distinctive character. He dedicates himself to his work and his prayers. He treats everyone with respect and does not wish to hurt anyone's feelings. He remains indifferent to such matters. While he may be close to his family, I have not observed him being particularly friendly with others,” he added, “He maintains a distance from others, and perhaps that is how it should be.”

Sonu’s work with AR Rahman

In the realm of cinema, Sonu Nigam and A.R. Rahman have collaborated on numerous musical compositions. Their initial partnership, "Ae Nazneen Suno Na" from the film Daud (1997), showcased a fusion of Sonu's vocal talent with Rahman's innovative soundscapes. This successful collaboration led to the creation of memorable tracks such as "Satrangi Re" from Dil Se (1998), the title song of Saathiya (2002), and "Lagaan" (2001). Additionally, they are recognized for their work on "Tanha Tanha" from Rangeela (1995).
