Singer Sonu Nigam has collaborated with two legendary musicians, AR Rahman and Pritam. In a recent chat with O2 India, Sonu shared that each composer has their own unique way of working. He mentioned that Rahman tends to be more relaxed, whereas Pritam dives into the details and takes a more active role in the process.

Sonu reflected on his time working with Pritam and AR Rahman during a chat. He mentioned a moment when he pointed out their contrasting styles to Pritam, which didn’t sit well with him.

Sonu explained, “AR Rahman gives you so much freedom. It never feels like you’re under pressure when you’re singing with him. Pritam, on the other hand, has a different approach. He dives deep into the details, and that’s not a bad thing. Everyone has their own way of doing things. I remember telling Pritam that he’s the complete opposite of AR Rahman. I pointed out that Rahman, being such a famous composer, doesn’t micromanage, while Pritam tends to focus on every little detail. He might have taken that the wrong way, but I was just sharing my experience.”

Sonu recalled that Pritam was just starting out as a music composer in a duo called Jeet-Pritam back then. While recording a song for their first film, Tere Liye, he noticed how involved Pritam was in the finer points of the process.

Sonu added, “I said it with affection that he was nitpicking. AR Rahman doesn’t say much. He just tells you to sing, and then he’s like, ‘okay, that’s it.’ Every singer will tell you that Rahman doesn’t interfere much, and that’s what makes him special.”

Sonu's adventure in music

Sonu Nigam and Vishal Dadlani have teamed up for their first single, Jaan Le Gayi, after collaborating on a bunch of Hindi film songs. This track is featured in the album Bhoomi 2024, created by the composer duo Salim-Sulaiman, with lyrics by Shraddha Pandit. It’s already racked up nearly two million views on YouTube.
