South Korean actress Song Hye Kyo has publicly addressed for the first time her prolonged struggle with "malicious and insulting" rumours that have been directed at her. The Glory actress, who has been a part of the entertainment industry since the age of 14, shared her experiences during her inaugural talk show appearance in 23 years on tvN's You Quiz on the Block, which was broadcast on Wednesday.
Song Hye Kyo breaks silence on rumours and ‘insulting’ comments
Song made her debut in the 1996 television drama First Love. She rose to prominence in 2000 with her performance in the KBS drama Autumn in My Heart, but her significant breakthrough occurred with the 2016 series Descendants of the Sun. Following their on-set romance, the actress married her co-star Song Joong Ki; however, their brief marriage ultimately ended in divorce.
The actress has frequently been the subject of unfounded rumours regarding her personal and professional life, yet she has largely refrained from addressing them until now.
“I wasn’t aware of it, but after working for so long, I’ve realised there are a lot of rumours about me," the star of Glory remarked during a talk show, as reported by Korea Times. She continued, “Occasionally, people I meet for the first time ask me about those rumours. When I receive such inquiries, I respond, ‘Yes, I’ve heard about it too. You should ask the person who started that.’”
Song Hye Kyo discusses ‘heartbreak’ and ‘emotional healing’
The actress expressed her views on dealing with derogatory comments, highlighting the emotional impact they had on her, particularly when her family was implicated. Although she has learned to dismiss most rumours, she reflected on instances when the unfounded allegations became overwhelming.
"I have faced so much criticism that I have reached a point of acceptance. I can handle malicious remarks directed at me, but when they involve my family, it truly hurts."
Recalling a specific incident that left her at a loss for words, she stated, "There were times when I thought, ‘This is excessive.’ On one occasion, someone confronted me about a rumour, and I responded, ‘I would provide an answer if I had the information, but I have only heard the same gossip, so I cannot comment further.’"
‘You need to love yourself’
The actress expressed her gratitude towards screenwriter Noh Hee Kyung for providing invaluable support during her challenges. Noh offered insights on self-love and gratitude that significantly aided her in managing her difficulties. The actress recounted how Noh motivated her to engage in daily self-reflection, which included documenting her aspirations and enumerating her blessings, a practice she diligently maintained for five years.
The cherished K-drama actress has embraced the idea of releasing regrets and accepting the fluctuations of life. She perceives her past experiences, whether favourable or unfavourable, as essential lessons contributing to her personal development.
Her renewed perspective on life was also influenced by her role in The Glory, where she focused on gaining acknowledgement for her acting abilities rather than being preoccupied with public opinion. As she nears her 40s, Song recognized that her physical appearance is no longer her defining characteristic; instead, her dedication to refining her acting craft has taken precedence.
