She has been in the film industry for more than 25 years and still consistently astonishes the audience with her ability to select challenging and unique roles. Lately, she appeared in Kollywood star Ajith Kumar’s successful Good, Bad, Ugly. She is currently anticipating the premiere of Tourist Family, a family drama featuring Sasikumar that will be released in theaters on May 1. As Simran speaks to an online media outlet, she mentions that she is in a positive state regarding her career at this moment.
Family On Tourist
Speaking about her decision to sign debutant director Abishan Jeevinth’s Tourist Family, she shared with HT, “What thrilled me was that this is a family drama infused with comedy. With so much humor in it, it appeals to the audience effectively. When the family audience exits the theatres laughing and discussing the film, it signifies that the team's effort has been worthwhile. A Tamil film of this sort has come out after a significant gap. The entire crew behind the film is youthful, and the producers have already delivered two hit films – Good Night and Lover. My co-star Sasikumar is also a director and a talented, subtle actor. The film includes a blend of emotion, romance, comedy, and drama, and I believe it’s really going to be delightful. ”
While the Petta actress has been receiving numerous offers, she has been selective about her choices. “The script reigns supreme, and it’s solely a strong script that prompts me to take on a project. I never accept a film based on a well-known actor, producer, or director. Yes, if that exists alongside a solid script, then fantastic. Only a good script allows people to recall the films. Occasionally, you must pass on films because the roles don’t align or they don’t offer good compensation. Some individuals act as if they are doing us a favor by offering us a role and providing inadequate pay – I have no affinity for such individuals and prefer not to collaborate with them,” Simran expresses openly.
The ups and downs of experiences
Coming to director Adhik Ravichandran’s Good Bad Ugly, the Citadel: Honey Bunny actor expresses that working on the Ajith Kumar film was a pleasure. “When Adhik presented the script, we could sense how the atmosphere would feel in theaters upon the movie's release. I believe it’s his clear vision that captured me, and with Good Bad Ugly, a standard has been established – you can watch the film repeatedly, particularly the segment where I appear. That entire portion was excellent. It was a wonderful experience. Hearing the applause and cheers in the theaters was delightful. It felt truly wonderful and fortunate,” she smiles.
Interestingly, Priya Varrier recreated Simran’s iconic dance number Thootu Thotthu Pesum Sultana from Ethirum Puthirum for Ajith’s Good, Bad, Ugly. The song became a sensation, and Simran has high praise for Priya. The actress, who was celebrated as the dancing queen, mentions, “The song itself is fantastic. We should express gratitude to technology for linking the young generation to that melody. I filmed it in 1999, and it has turned into a youth phenomenon again now. Priya performed exceptionally well, and she appears very attractive, and even Arjun Das is impressive. ”
Inquire of the Tiger 3 star if there’s any role she has yet to engage in, and a quick reply follows, “I would love to undertake an action role! It would be really enjoyable because when I observed Priya (Simran) in Good, Bad, Ugly, in the entire Kill Bill costume, the demeanor truly captivated me. The audience was thrilled to see me in that persona. I thought why not pursue something fully developed along those lines, but with a solid script, of course. ” When it comes to whom she wishes to collaborate with, she names Charlie Chaplin as her favorite actor along with Alfred Hitchcock, the filmmaker.
Considering that there are chances for actors now on TV, OTT, and films, why is Simran still not appearing more frequently across all these mediums? “There are chances that keep arising, but I believe the remuneration is not satisfactory. I question how many actresses are genuinely making the amounts they claim. Maybe I am not promoting myself effectively,” she chuckles, adding that public relations is not her main concern. “However, nothing can substitute your hard work – no matter how much promotion you engage in, it’s your work that speaks and the audience and applause that communicate. What matters most is how much the audience values your efforts. Nothing surpasses genuineness, the original OG. ”
About her comment on being an 'aunt'
Recently, at an award ceremony, Simran recounted an experience where an actress acquaintance in the industry ridiculed her for taking on ‘aunty roles’. “I was truly feeling distressed at that moment, and I expressed my emotions. That’s all. I have been portraying aunty roles since the start of my career, and it’s a term I cherish. Engaging in aunty roles is not a negative thing,” she remarks, adding, “I don’t believe actresses can genuinely be friends within the industry. This incident merely confirmed it. It’s very painful when friends betray you. The person reached out to me the following day – it wasn’t awkward, but the connection will not remain the same. ”
