Kapoor & Sons won over both fans and critics when it hit theaters in 2016. Produced by Dharma Productions, the film featured a talented cast including Rishi Kapoor, Sidharth Malhotra, Fawad Khan, Alia Bhatt, Ratna Pathak Shah, and Rajat Kapoor. Fawad portrayed a gay character who reveals his sexuality to his family. In a chat with Lilly Singh on her YouTube channel, Sidharth mentioned that the film presented male sexuality in a subtle way, marking a first for mainstream Hindi cinema.

Sidharth talks about how people reacted to Kapoor & Sons

Sidharth reflected on how the film was received, saying, “I believe the way it was presented really contributed to the positive feedback we got. I think everyone found at least one moment they could connect with. It also shed light on how a family member navigates issues of sexuality. The approach was subtle, respectful, and nuanced, making it feel natural rather than shocking. This was, I think, the first time in Hindi cinema that such a topic was explored on a major commercial platform.”

Fawad really knocked it out of the park

He shared his thoughts on the film, saying, “We were the first to showcase it in a commercial way. It wasn’t a big deal; any family in Delhi or Mumbai would handle it like that. I could totally relate. Fawad did an amazing job in his role, but I remember we improvised that scene at the dining table where he comes in and tells me. Shakun asked how I would react, and I said, ‘Let’s just roll the camera.’”

Right now, Sidharth is busy filming Dinesh Vijan's upcoming project, Param Sundari. He’ll be starring alongside Janhvi Kapoor, and the movie is set to hit theaters on July 25.
