Filmmaker Siddharth P. Malhotra has dedicated two decades to the industry, exploring various genres, with a notable proficiency in medical dramas. He is the creator of two highly acclaimed medical series, Dill Mill Gayye and Sanjeevani, which have garnered significant viewership. This year, he has expanded the genre into the streaming realm with the web series Doctors.

Siddharth P. Malhotra on difference between television and streaming platforms

The filmmaker emphasizes the key differences in how genres are presented on these platforms. In an interview with Hindustan Times, he noted that throughout the nearly 1,000 episodes of Dill Mill Gayye and Sanjeevani, there was not a single death depicted. The focus on romance and drama is paramount in television, and regulations restrict the portrayal of blood and surgical scenes. This raises the question of how to authentically represent the medical elements in a medical drama.

Authenticity and realism in Doctors

With fewer restrictions, Malhotra was able to achieve a higher level of authenticity in Doctors. He explained that every case presented in the series is inspired by real-life situations, including topics such as euthanasia, organ donation, and assaults on police officers. The production utilized prosthetics to depict injuries and involved actors who trained for two weeks with actual surgeons. The commitment to realism is evident, as the close-up shots of hands performing medical procedures feature real doctors.

The cast of Doctors includes Sharad Kelkar, Harleen Sethi, Viraf Patell, Aamir Ali, and Vivaan Shah, and the series encompasses multiple storylines and interconnections.

Breaking barriers with Doctors on streaming platforms

Malhotra and his team were able to confront their apprehensions, recognizing the opportunities available to them. They faced no restrictions from either the channel or the platform, allowing them to explore themes that were previously considered off-limits. Nevertheless, they approached these subjects with sensitivity.

All ten episodes of Doctors are available for streaming on JioCinema (OTTplay Premium).
