Kamal Haasan and Sarika were married in 1988. Nevertheless, they chose to separate in 2002, ultimately finalizing their divorce in 2004. In a recent interview, their daughter, actress and singer Shruti Haasan, discussed how her parents' divorce highlighted for her the significance of achieving financial independence.

Shruti Haasan has expressed that her parent's divorce led her to understand the importance of financial independence

In discussing the importance of financial independence, Shruti Haasan remarked, “I was fortunate to be born into a wonderful family with artistic and intelligent parents, and I enjoyed many comforts. However, I also experienced a different reality. When my parents separated, everything changed. It was then that I understood the significance of financial independence and the need for personal autonomy. As a daughter witnessing my mother leave her marriage, I learned a crucial lesson about the necessity for women to be self-sufficient.”

She elaborated on the impact of her parents' divorce, Kamal Haasan and Sarika, stating, “It is painful. The suffering is felt not only by the children but also by the parents. This situation is increasingly common in many households today. It is not merely that parents experience pain from divorce or separation; there are families where, for societal reasons, parents remain together, and often, the hidden anguish in those homes can be even greater.”

Shruti, born in 1985 prior to the marriage of Kamal and Sarika, later welcomed a sister, Akshara, who is also an actress. Following the divorce, both sisters were raised by their mother, Sarika.
