Earlier this month, filmmaker P Sheshadri revealed his plans to remake the very first talkie in Kannada cinema, Sati Sulochana. Originally directed by YV Rao and featuring actors like Subbaiah Naidu, Tripuramba, R Nagendra Rao, and Lakshmi Bai, the film hit theaters on March 3, 1934. Sheshadri aims to release his version on the same date in 2026. He’s brought in Srujan Lokesh, the grandson of Subbaiah Naidu, to not only portray his grandfather but also to support the project.
On the Gold Class with Mayuraa Raghavendra podcast, actor Srujan, known for his role in Navagraha, shared, “Being the grandson of Subbaiah Naidu, I discovered so much I didn’t know about Sati Sulochana. For example, they built a 360-degree open roof set for the film, relying solely on sunlight for lighting. They used reflectors to ensure the cast and background were well-lit. Hearing about these details makes you question what we’ve really accomplished in life,” he remarked.
Srujan, who also hosts the talk show, mentioned that with the new Sati Sulochana, they’re not just remaking the film but focusing on its production. “Our film dives into what went on behind the scenes of Sati Sulochana. It’s set in the 1930s and explores how the producer got involved, the process of casting the lead roles, the music director’s contributions, the release journey, and the challenges faced along the way,” he explained.
Since it's been nearly a hundred years since the film was released and the original team is no longer around, Sheshadri is currently deep into research, according to Srujan. One of his latest discoveries is that the original script of Sati Sulochana was found at Bengaluru University. They’re also digging into books about the film, Subbaiah Naidu, and director YV Rao to understand how Sati Sulochana came to life.
Srujan mentions that every year, the film's release is celebrated as Vishwa Kannada Cinema Day, and he believes it should also recognize the talented actors from the industry. “Sati Sulochana has received the recognition it deserves; now it’s time to take it a step further and do even more,” he states.
