Shreya Ghoshal recently addressed the issue of the male-dominated perspective in the lyrics of numerous Bollywood songs, expressing her belief that this situation requires reform. During an interview with Lily Singh, the singer also revealed her feelings of embarrassment regarding her song "Chikni Chameli."

Shreya is embarrassed by Chikni Chameli

Shreya recognized that she has performed several songs that might be deemed somewhat provocative, such as Chikni Chameli. She remarked, "There exists a delicate distinction between being sensual and sexy, and the outright objectification of women. My growing awareness of this issue stems from observing young girls singing these songs without grasping their implications. They simply dance along and approach me, expressing, ‘Oh, we adore your song! May we perform it for you?’ This situation leaves me feeling quite uncomfortable. Hearing a young girl, merely five or six years old, reciting those lyrics is troubling."

She further expressed that the lyrics would likely possess a more refined quality if they had been penned by a woman: "I have become aware of this. Discussing themes of sensuality is not inherently wrong, but the manner in which it is articulated is significant. A woman would have approached it with greater elegance. It is fundamentally a matter of perspective, and within our society, particularly in India, it is crucial to establish certain standards. The influence of films and music on people's lives is substantial, and any major song or film inevitably becomes part of our cultural narrative. I do not wish to be associated with that kind of legacy."

A Reddit user posted Shreya’s video, prompting a swift response from fans. One comment stated, "Shreya is correct. Chikni Chameli is blatantly vulgar and unrefined. I have never appreciated Katrina in that role." Another user criticized her for performing the song in a recent episode of Indian Idol, remarking, "In a very recent episode of Indian Idol, she performed this song herself and appeared to enjoy it. Hypocrisy truly knows no limits."

Another Reddit user remarked, "I have attended her concerts, and she performed Chikni Chameli at both!" Another comment noted, "She continues to sing Chikni Chameli at her concerts, with the most recent performance being at the end of last year in the US... a bit of double standards!" In response to Shreya’s comments, another user stated, “Nonsense... she recently sang a Telugu song, and if anyone understands the lyrics, it’s essentially a woman instructing a man on how to use her body as he pleases. It’s all driven by money.”
