Shoojit Sircar's film I Want To Talk, featuring Abhishek Bachchan, received a favorable reception from both audiences and critics upon its release. Nevertheless, the film struggled to achieve commercial success at the box office. In a conversation with NDTV, the director expressed his disappointment regarding the film's financial performance.
Shoojit on I Want To Talk's box office failure
Regarding the box office outcome, Shoojit Sircar remarked, “I aspire to create films as long as I can do so according to my vision and principles. At times, the results can be disheartening. I felt quite unsettled, as I could not pinpoint what resonated or failed to resonate with the audience. However, with the film now available on OTT platforms, I have noticed a positive response from viewers. It is challenging to articulate my feelings on this matter, but indeed, box office results can be troubling.”
The director further clarified that he does not categorize his film as niche, stating, “Whether I Want To Talk is considered a niche film is subjective; I believe that niche films can encompass various layers. Since this film is set in the United States, it features multiple languages. The title is in English, and many film enthusiasts are accustomed to international cinema. How do we classify the themes they engage with? From this viewpoint, I have never regarded my film as belonging to a niche category.”
Additionally, he mentioned that Amitabh Bachchan expressed his appreciation for the film and was pleased with its execution.
